As August begins, I want to share a concern that weighs heavily on my heart: the feelings of disillusionment and confusion that many experience often. It’s a familiar struggle . . . one that I, too, have faced on my journey.
I remember the day I received an unexpected letter from U.S. President Eisenhower, stamped in bold letters, “Confidential Information,” and my entire world seemed to tilt. I was ordered to Okinawa, Japan, for sixteen long months, leaving behind everything I held dear. In that moment, disillusionment overwhelmed me, not just in my current circumstances, but with my faith. I remember questioning everything, feeling abandoned, frustrated, and helpless. My heart was heavy as I navigated the uncertainty.
But let me reassure you, His Light shines even in the darkest times. Just before shipping out, my brother, Orville, handed me Jim Elliot’s book, Through Gates of Splendour, seemingly a simple gesture, but it carried a profound message. His insistence that I read the book echoed in my ears like orders from a drill sergeant, even as my spirit struggled against it. In moments like these, we often resist what we truly need, don’t we?
